KUL-CGK-KUL

Yesterday on Valentine's day some of us from the crew decided to go sightseeing in Kuala-Lumpur. Not everyone wanted to come along, so our purser Max, the assistant purser Marian, R. and me went walking around and did a little shopping. Of course a delicious cinnamon role at Cinnabon at Petronas Towers. Delicious!

Later in the afternoon we took a river cruise on Kuching. On the boat we had dinner and later that night, we split up and went our own way. So that's how we spent St. Valentine's Day.

This morning after breakfast I swam a little in the gorgeous hotel pool and then proceded to get a great massage in the hotel spa. Then I did some work in the room, while R. took a nap. Today we had to do Kuala-Lumpur - Jakarta - Kuala-Lumpur (KUL-CGK-KUL) and duty call would be at 13.00 to be in the lobby at 14.15. The flight arrives from AMS at 15.05 and we relieve the crew immediately after arrival. But I was not going to the airport with the crew, I had other work to do first, before I meet them at the gate. So I showered, shaved and put on my uniform and packed only the carry-on with the essentials. You have to remember that if the aircraft goes tech in CGK and it gets cancelled, you need stuff for the next 24 hours. I left the hotel and took the hotel shuttle bus to Putra Jaya station and from there the train to Sepang airport.

At Sepang I performed my duties (cannot talk about them here) and afterwards went to Starbucks Coffee to get a Frapuccino and type out a report, while waiting for the time to head to the gate.

I got a SMS from R. that they were almost at Sepang. I waited for them in front of the airport. From there the cockpit crew, purser and assistant purser went to get briefed at Malaysia Airlines Flight Dispatch, while we waited at the gate for our aircraft to arrive. KL0809 arrived from Amsterdam at 15.00 and it was scheduled to depart at 16.15. It's a 2 hour flight to Jakarta (CGK). We got 4 extra crew for this flight. Remember we came in from AMS on a 747-400 combi, which only uses 9 crew members, but today we had a 747-400 full pax which operates with 13 crew members. The extra crew come from another flight. There are 3 sets a crew in Malaysia at all times.

After the aircraft pulled in, we relieved and said goodbye to a very tired crew from Amsterdam and went on board, whereafter the crew started with the semi safety-check.

KUL is an intermediate stop, so there were still passengers on board. I was assigned in area 8/9 (rows 51-69) with Arjan. After the transit passengers came back onboard, the other passengers starting their journey in KUL came on as well. We were full going down. After the doors were secured, the demo was started and everyone started with the flight preperation. Max started his welcome speech:

"Goodafternoon ladies and gentlemen. There is a new crew on board. My name is Max van Monfort and I am your purser. The assistant-purser is Ms. Eijs. On behalf of Captain Hogevorst and his crew we would to say welcome back to the passengers from Amsterdam and welcome on board to the new passengers on this 747-400. The flight is KL0809 and we will be continuing our journey to Jakarta. This flight is carried out in cooperation with Air France, Malaysia Airlines, Northwest Airlines and SkyTeam. Flight time between Kuala-Lumpur and Jakarta will be 2 hours. In a moment we will.........."

After doing this in Dutch and English it was repeated in Indonesian with a pre-recorded tape. Finally we got the sign from the CPT to take our seats and in no time we were in the air on our way to the island of Java. Meal service was sandwich and a drink and in-flight entertainment were 2 sitcoms.

R. with two unaccompanied minors all the way from London. They travelled London-Amsterdam-Kuala-Lumpur-Jakarta

At 17.25 we landed at Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta International Airport-Cengkareng (CGK). After everone deplaned we had an hour break and sat upstairs in Business Class with some coffee, tea, juice and a sandwich. We would be on the ground for 1 hour and 40 minutes. The cleaners, caterers and the ground agents did their thing. KLM is handled by Garuda Indonesia at CGK.

After the break was over, the crew made sure the catering was complete. Same as on the way down, we get limited catering for the 2 hour flight back to KUL. It would also be a sandwich service. After the flight leaves KUL, dinner would be served. The flight only had 186 passengers on board... the flight will fill out in KUL. KUL is a hub for KLM as all the passengers to/from Australia and New Zealand transfer at KUL. So it was going to be an easy flight... or so we thought. In CGK the flight number switches from KL0809 to KL0810.

Take-off went well. One hour into the flight back to KUL, the crew went to pick up the garbage and hand out immigration forms to those disembarking in Malaysia, when we hit into some major turbulence. It was really bad! I'll admit... i was scared. Everything was rattling and shaking! CPT briefed for crew to take their seats, so we buckled up. It lasted a whole 20 minutes, before we could get up again. Then it was a rush to secure the cabin and prepare it for landing. I must say having a purser giving out orders, certainly helps matters. Efficiency is key! Max even had me poring out the coffee and tea pots and locking in the food carts.

After we took our seats again, we touched down in KUL on time at 22.00.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Kuala-Lumpur. Please remain seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop and the fasten seatbelt sign has been switched off. Please be careful when removing your belongings from the overhead luggage compartment, for items may have shifted during the flight and may fall out.....blah blah blah............. Passengers disembarking in Kuala-Lumpur, we wish a pleasant stay. This crew will also be disembarking here and you will be receiving a whole new crew, so we wish passengers continuing to Amsterdam, a pleasant continuation of your journey.............."

At the gate a crew was waiting to relieve us and we said goodbye. We walked straight outside the airport to the crew bus, where Pango the driver, was waiting for us. Our bus driver took us back to Bangi.

Now I'm going to type out a report and catch my bed. Friday night is my last leg back to Amsterdam.

All the pictures of the flight can be viewed here. Submap CGK

Cheers!

Leuke reisverslagje inderdaad, Ry.
