Peking... also known as Beijing

Yesterday Grietje, Brenda, Freddy and I flew AMS-FRA-PEK with Lufthansa all the way. AMS-FRA we flew with an A320.

Once in FRA we headed straight to the LH service desk to pick up our onward ticket to Beijing (PEK). Although staffco booked us in economy, LH upgraded us to Business Class when we showed our company I.D. card. You must know, that altough airlines are competitors of each other, they take care of each other's staff. Because we were now travelling in Business, we had access to the Senator's Lounge, which is great, because there you have internet access, free food and drinks.

The FRA-PEK flight was smooth and this morning we touched down at Beijing Capital Airport, where the weather was nice. The Business Class product that LH offers is good and the friendly crew made the whole experience pleasurable.

Clearing immigration and customs is a real nightmare in Beijing! All of those forms you have to fill out! It's unbelievable! I thought the USA was bad enough!

What's the first thing you do after a long flight? That's right you head straight outside and get a smoke. OMG... that first pull of the cigarette was awesome!

Me and Grietje doing the same

After we finished smoking we took a taxi to the Beijing Golden tulip, where we were going to be staying. After we checked-in we decided to grab a bite at the McDonald's on the other side of the street. Today was a resting day... tomorrow we start to work. After McD's we each went to our own room and took a nap and we were going to meet each other in the lobby at 18.00 to go sightseeing.

The hotel is really modern with flat screen TV's.

Check out this state of the art toilet! It has an electronic button for everything.

At 18.00 I met the others in the lobby and we went around the corner to the main shopping straat in Beijing... Wangfujing Road. R. who has been to Beijing before, told me about this shopping area. All I can say is WOW! So many lights and people! Amazing! Also a lot of strange Chinese stuff. You gotta see it to believe it!

Yeah... that's a real pig's face you see. Chinese people eat that! Yuck!!!

You can't see it good on this pic, but those are baby chickens, scorpions and worms on a sate stick. They deep-fry it and you have a snack. :-(

Well the toilets are a trip! The hotel is the only place you'll find a 'normal' toilet bowl. All the public toilets in Beijing are just holes in the ground. So if you have to take a dump, you have to hike up that skirt, or take-off the pants completely and go through the knees. LOL!

After we finished wandering around Wangfujung, we decided to call it a night and go back to the hotel. In Brenda's room, we discussed what we were going to do the next day. I don't know for how long, I am going to be in China... it all depends in how quickly we can get the job done (can't discuss). We have open tickets anyway.

Anyway I'm jet-lagged and sleepy. I'm catching my bed.

How can a city be so modern, but still have crappy toilets like that? I really cannot comprehend that, you know.

Anyway be careful and thread safely.
