Goodbye 767... hello MD11!

While I was working this morning, I got a call from R. that he arrived safely from Paramaribo (PBM). He did this trip with his cousin Andries, and they had a great time with their family.

R. with his cousin Andries de G. on their way to PBM - Picture by R. de G.

He told me to log-in on CabiNet (KLM online scheduling system) to check something out, so I did. I noticed immediately that crewco granted another PBM again for January 21st! When the flight was first requested, the system said that there were enough "'éénbanders" (economy class crew) on the flight... but two dropped out and he still got on. Unbelievable... Surinam... twice in one month! Then he told me to check his KLM Email 4 Crew account and there I noticed that R. has requested conversion training for the MD11!!!!!

With the arrival of the 777 and the A330 there was a shortage of MD11 cabin crew. R. like a lot of CA's doesn't like the MD11 for lack of Overhead Crew Rest (OCR) among others.... the MD11 is an old aircraft and not user friendly. KLM put out a bulletin requesting CA's for conversion training and R. responded because of me :-). You see the MD11 flies to Aruba (AUA) and that way I can fly along as a companion. R's aircraft package consisted of 737 and 747 (standard for all KLM ICA crew) and one interchangeable (767). The 767 would make place for the A330... his conversion training on the A330 was scheduled for March. So now R. will drop the 767/A330 and go for the MD11. Conversion training (1 day course) isn't set yet, but it will happen over 2006. I can't wait, because I'll be in AUA more often than anything for 3-4 days, while R. is laying-over.

Oh yeah!

Mazzel,

Ryan
