After we arrived at HEL, we went to the Servisair/GlobeGround office. Servisair/GlobeGround (simply known as GG) used to be the ground handling division of Lufthansa (LH). However a few years ago it was sold to a British company called Servisair and it merged into Servisair/GlobeGround. They have several station around the world. At HEL they perform passenger- and ramp services, load control/operations, de-icing, cargo/mail and aircraft cleaning. Their customers include SAS Scandinavian, KLM, Lufthansa, BMI etc.
Our contact person was Jukka Hämäläinen, who was the Managing Director for GG/HEL.

GG ramp equipment

Jukka explained Freddy and me the issues at hand. It's like this; GG handles many airlines at HEL. People want everything fast and easy, so GG wanted several check-in options for their passengers. This included self-service check-in via a kiosk, internet check-in and SMS check-in via GSM. So the passenger checks in with the airline he/she is travelling with and the data will be automatically be transfered to the airport systems that GG uses, which are several like CODECO, Gaetan, Merlin, Abacus, PARS, LHS etc.
So GG contacted SITA. SITA together with Amadeus/1A used its CUTE technology (Common Use Terminal Equipment). The one created for GG/HEL was "AirportConnect Kiosk". It's SITA’s self-service check-in product that may be used by a single airline in a dedicated environment or by multiple airlines in a common use self-service (CUSS) environment. AirportConnect Kiosk is fully in-line with IATA’s CUSS specifications and uses the latest touch screen technology.

SITA & AMADEUS joint venture

I am not allowed to get into details, but let's just say that the system isn't working optimal with certain airline reservations- and check-in systems.

After we garthered all the info we needed, we contacted AMADEUS in Nice, France, to answer some questions for us and to request a IT specialist in HEL. He arrived within 4 hours via CDG with AF. As he set to see what the problem was, we observed passengers who were making use of the system and asked about its easy-of-use.

After doind stuff I cannot talk about, we headed back to the hotel for dinner and to do some prep work for the next day. More to come!

Ayo!
